June 2015

Hurrah! Finished implementing minor revisions to my own @openlibhums article. Relieved not to have been rejected! (2x double-blind readers.)

Final q today was about Netherlands gold OA subscription negotiations - which I have of course heard of! Misheard the question! #liber2015

Today I'll be speaking at LIBER (at 11am). Open Access in the Humanities Disciplines: Why is it so Hard and How Can We Fix it?

THIS is at least part of why UPs /must/ embrace open access. Must engage people on a lifelong basis for an educated society. #AAUP15

How do Maher's remarks on prestige building match against Tiefenthaler's remarks on "top" universities holding more & more wealth? #AAUP15

Why are there economic problems in ScholComms? Partly B/C it mirrors broader acad econ. Marr: it's both dissemination & assessment #AAUP15

All too many resonances with problems in UK HE at #AAUP15. Focus on quantified measurement and accountability leading to focus on financial.

Optimism of today's keynote on evolution & innovation of university presses contrasts sharply with pessimism in OA monographs panel #AAUP15

Most important observation on getting good annotation: as ever, it's not just the tech. Community is all. #AAUP15

Have been really geeky and got a seat right at the front for the first session of #AAUP15 today. Because it's Vint. Cerf. #excited

I do find it remarkable what goes uncited. J Ryan's The Novel After Theory chapter on Pynchon & Deleuze doesn't mention Mattessich's book.

Still find in-flight Wifi totally odd, especially on a transatlantic flight. Greetings from 20,000 feet, all!

Need to be more specific about the "societies against OA rhetoric" in the same way that I say "publishers" is hardly a homogeneous category.

Interesting which societies object to OA (those that make money from subs). Lots of small but valued socs asking about OLH at the moment...

Just returned from my guilty-pleasure conference: International Pynchon Week in Athens! Jealous of those seeing Leftfield tonight, though.

Sitting in one of those tense conference panels where the speaker rips into the work of someone in the audience.

The children on my flight have a toy that sings
Toy that sings
Toy that sings
"The wheels on the bus go round and round"
All flight long.

Temptation when you want to impress a conference is to give comprehensive presentation. It's more impressive to speak under time, though.

. @MickiKaufman makes a great point: want to start out visualising, dump the command line and just use a spreadsheet #CSDHACH2015

.@MickiKaufman working on quantifying Kissinger - reminds us that visualisation is a process, not just a finished product #CSDHACH2015

Q. for @clured re whether his approach avoids the low-pass filter problems/controversy #CSDHACH2015 - a. TextPlot customizes smoothing

. @clured points out that TextPlot works best on works or corpora with distinctive semantic shifts over chronology #CSDHACH2015

Join me, @JohnWillinsky, Heather Morrison and Andrea Whiteley at 3pm in Colonel By C03 for our open access panel #CSDHACH2015 #CongreSSH

OAPEN-UK has good study data that backs up @monterosato's point that people are using digital/open books differently. #csdhach2015

(But then, we usually mediate the database anyway -- we write interfaces that are more conducive to narrative #csdhach2015)

Given that the RDB is "f--ing terrible" (@lycheefan's technical term) for narrative, is it the right form for DH work? #csdhach2015

. @lycheefan raising fundamental question of what it means to "read" digital literature; distant/shallow/non-consumptive etc. #csdhach2015

. @lycheefan talking about relational databases and the rigidity/structuration of SQL, which might be problematic for some DH #csdhach2015

Surveillance co-produced between states and corporations, not purely the former, notes @whkchun #csdhach2015 #CongreSSH

How, @whkchun asks, is a control technology sold as a liberation device, as a solution to democracy? #CSDHACH2015

. @whkchun shows infamous Internet utopia advert: "there is no race / there is no gender". Oh dear! #CSDHACH2015 #CongreSSH

Digital files as separate editions that each teach us about the social & material processes of their construction @ryancordell #csdhach2015

. @ryancordell analysing Exif data to determine "compositor" for digital ed of Lewisburg Chronicle. Paolo: person or process? #csdhach2015

Thinking of OCR technology as a species of compositor, fashioning a new edition - @ryancordell #csdhach2015

"Oore upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered wrak end weary". But ending critique at "bad OCR" is limited says @ryancordell #csdhach2015

. @ryancordell citing @mkirschenbaum on attention to framing aspects of electronic texts; as new editions. #csdhach2015

My q for this talk: how best to reconcile standards-based UD for inclusivity with often-dirty DH data? #csdhach2015

Next up here are Kendra Rawluk and Carissa Alexander on "Disability: The Last Frontier for DH" #csdhach2015

Even though it's a closed-domain probem, no simple phoneme mapping to IPA, for instance says Singh #csdhach2015

Gurpreet Singh currently talking about the challenges of developing a text-to-speech system for the Guru Granth Sahib. #csdhach2015

Looking forward to @ryancordell's brilliantly titled paper, '“Q i-jtb the Raven”: Taking Dirty OCR Seriously', even via Skype #csdhach2015
